Report of UN’s special rapporteur on the right to food and pesticides in agricultural production

A new UN report on the right to food was presented on 7 March 2017 to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.

Highlighting the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes, the report delivered a number of recommendations, including in particular, to promote agroecology and requested States to have responsible systems for agriculture, public health and the environment. States should also raise farmers’ awareness on this issue, encourage farmers to adopt agroecological practices and provide incentives for organically produced food.
